Beginner's Guide to Parenthood 2.0 Malaysia

November 19, 2018 0
It's been awhile since I last went for parenthood workshops such as this, and it is always good to come back for a good refresher on parenthood just to keep ourselves in touch with what's happening in today's era of parenting.

The event today hosted by Parenthood Magazine Malaysia alongside with Sunway Medical Centre and Nippon Paint Malaysia; Provides a good range of topic of useful information in today's workshop takeaway for every parents and new parents-to-be.

Some of the topics today which I find really informative are, Raising A Balanced & Successful Child In The 21st Century by Ms Sam Jeng Mun a certified clinical psychologist who focused on the effects of screen time in children. She also discusses the best way to tackle the touch screen generation and the importance of free-play in a child’s development.

A simple guide of screen time for your child consists of the following infographic that you can refer too (can easily fish this schedule off from Google/Facebook). I always keep this in my mobile but then I seldom refer to it. So it's good to set it in your alarm instead, atleast no matter how busy or involved you get with your work or duty or tasks, the alarm will ring you out of it and takeover whatever screen time and parenting duty that should be done. Make it a good habit rather than ignore it. Start from 30 mintes then increase gradually but if you can avoid it, then avoid it as long as possible.

After that, we were brought through a very informative yet funny topic that every parent will surely remember and new parents will be bound to be surprise; Understanding Your Baby’s Developmental Milestones by Consultant Paediatrician, Dr Cham Weng Tarng. It's a talk about the developmental milestones according to ages and stages together with ways to encourage a child’s physical and mental development. So this can range from the way we as parents potray or behave or even react and respond to infront of our child. Because our child from the moment they are inside our womb, they start to learn and pick up sounds and feelings. As they are born, they start to feel, touch, sense, hear, see and even taste. And all babies from birth are like sponge, they magically soak up everything they are able to learn and absorb with ease. So it's good to provide them with the best environment to grow up in! With that in place, you as a parent gets involved and monitor your own child's milestone to ensure they hit atleast most of it age appropriately, because if you notice a child for example, does not smile or responds back to you at 3 months of age, no expression at all, means it's a sign that your child should seek a specialists for further assessment.

Dr Cham also talked about Myth Vs Truth on Children & Ilnesses, which touched on
vaccination, contagious diseases, indoor air quality as well as viruses and bacteria that you
didn’t think would exist in your own cozy little home. One of the subject he mentions how bacterias spread easily, for example, let's take coughing in the picture. When one coughs, the bacteria spreads out for atleast 1.8meter in area and the bacteria's stays active for 48 hours. which is why disinfection and sanitization plays an important role today in curbing viruses from spreading.

And in today's session, the other highlighted topic when it comes to hygiene and family health, it will be the 'Indoor Wellness Program' by Dr Amir Hamzah who is the President of the Malaysian Society of Allergy & Immunology (MSAI) which talks about air pollution, especially indoors, where many of us think we’re safe. This is where it is important also for indoor cleanliness. Incase you are unaware, our walls traps dust and bacteria's too. And some walls traps moist which can turn into hazardous molds that is very unhealthy for anyone living there. I am currently experience this in my master room and it gets easier to fall sick. Which was why I had to invest in a air dehumidifier and an air purifier. But it doesn't solve the issue even after steam washing the mattresses and rainbow vacuum the bed whilst cleaning up the whole room from the ceiling to the floor. The issue lies in the walls against my bedroom where there are no obstruction on the outsides, leaving it open to the wind, rain and sun. So when it's hot, the walls in my room heats up super quick and when it is cold, we don't need an aircond at all.

Basically, a good well-ventilated and furnished room is ideal for a better living condition. Now I have to re-renovate my room and re-paint the walls with Nippon Paint Malaysia, virus-guard and maybe weather-guard if they have it. Have to go check it out in-stores.

The session today, was a fun session where two lucky couples on themselves a free painting package worth RM1500 by posting their most creative photo of them on their social media at the Kid's Room Installment that was set up behind in the workshop hall. And participants raced to the stage to get the right answer for take home with a cute little Blobby Doll by Nippon Paint Malaysia.

Largest Culinary Competition by Smart Junior Chef Malaysia

November 10, 2018 0
Today at DaMen Mall USJ, the first ever Largest Culinary Competition was held by Smart Junior Chef for kids in Malaysia.

Incase you are unaware, Smart Junior Chef is a fun place to let your kids learn and be explosed to baking and cooking where they explore their hidden talents and find interests in the kitchen. It's basically a place where your kids learn baking from scratch!

This competition held today, is an annual event held to showcase the pure and raw baking and cooking talent in the children participating today and how they build their creativeness on food. Smart Junior Chef creates recipes that is fun to learn together with the chefs. Not only that, they make it so simple when teaching the children to bake or cook with their recipe and it truly educates the child to take up this life skill and make it more fun by being creative, artistic and even sometimes magical!

Smart Junior Chef works towards their goal to inspire these children to acknowledge and improve their talents, learn to understand their responsibility and be independent, which helps in boosting self-esteem in these children whilst enabling a healthy learning environment for the children to be creative, self-discipline, work independently or work together as a team and to be patient.

Through cooking, a child can learn the different ingredients, shapes, sizes, colours, textures and portions needed and even taste! So it can be a really fun thing to do and rewarding when they have the opportunity to learn the taste, feel and small of their very own cooking. Hence, Smart Junior Chef aims to influence and inspire children from a very young age of 4 years onwards to be creative and explore their hidden potential in the kitchen.

My son's first trial class at Smart Junior Chef Bandar Kinrara [you can read here] really made a difference in his life and it piqued his interest in cooking in the kitchen with me everyday since then.

I remember that he learns to bake from scratch for the first time which made him truly enjoy the journey. There were no shortcuts to baking for my son because Smart Junior Chef believes that it's good to allow the child to do it by their own self and learn from scratch as there are no shortcuts nor ready-made recipe available. It is a fun and time-rewarding process that teaches basic skills and educational at the same time too.

It is a valuable lesson to have your kids learn as this is a life-long skill by learning to bake and cook. Smart Junior Chef has 3 branches in Klang Valley, Selangor and this would be the perfect time to expose your kids to wonderful culinary skills in their life.

Heartiest CONGRATULATIONS to all the junior participants of this Culinary Cooking Competition in showcasing their talent, passion and creativity today!

Discover Harriston Chocolates in Malaysia

October 20, 2018 0
My son loves chocolate the most! Thanks to his daddy for introducing it to him (wait...or was it me?). Well, who doesn't love chocolate! It is he comfort food for many around the world. If there was 1 thing most people have in common, is their secret desire for chocolate! Especially the ones that can melt in your mouth!

Today we took our eldest boy out for a special time just for him to bond with his mommy (me) and daddy (my husband). We do this from time to time, we will allocate a moment out just for each of our kids. Because if adults can have "ME" time, why not the child too? And it is amazing when you start doing this. Because that special moment is one that the child will remember the most and enjoy the most. It makes them feel special and loved, yet not singled out. It also gives us a more closer connection and bond with them, which makes interaction more convenient.

So today it's all about Daniel at Harriston Signature outlet in Taman Shamelin, Cheras. It was quite a huge outlet as it was situated behind 1Shamelin mall and amongst the factory outlets nearby. Harriston, founded since 2005 is now managed by the 2nd generation of the Teng family; They desire to be the world-famous chocolate emporium in Malaysia.

Harriston recently launched the world's 4th type of chocolate called the ruby chocolate that comes after dark, milk and white chocolate.

It was a really unique twist to the chocolatey flavour which has a subtle taste of berries. It now comes in two variant of thin strips and coconut crunch bar, which are available exclusively at Harriston stores under the Harrison Signature line.

Not only do they sell chocolates, I noticed they also have a mini cafe at this venue too!

And for today we joined their DIY workshop that is specially created for age 3 years and above with the adults. It was a really fun experience learning how to handmade our own chocolate art.

It was a full hands-on experience that is filled with fun and joy for us as a family, my son enjoyed it very much as he learn a new skill in chocolate making. The Harriston DIY Workshops incorporates 4 processes altogether, where each session lasts for an hour and it's open for the public to join daily from 9.30am to 6.00pm for only RM35 per pax.

The workshop usually begins with the chocolate moulding process where you get to coat Chocolate moulds, moulding and unmoulding Chocolates. We were taught how to mould Harris, the Orang Utan, by adding in the different chocolate types to created a unique design to bring home as a souvenir treat or as a gift to your loved ones. My son being the creative one as he always is, he just pour whatever he chooses and his dad guide him only.

Once done, we left it aside to cool down the first layer of the mould, then we were taught how to make lollipops by learning how to pour melted chocolate unto the baking sheet with the lollipop stick in the center and then to tap the edges of the table to allow the Chocolate to be evenly distributed. Then followed with a chocolate piping bag to achieve our desired shapes. My son was so happy that he immediately lift the stick up to enjoy his lollipop but the chocolate haven't cooled down yet so it was just the stick he took.

Then we poured Ganache chocolates into the mini chocolate cups that was prepared for us beforehand and we decorated it with nuts, rainbow sprinkles, coconut shavings and raisins.

Then we were taught how to coat biscuits and decorating it with the chocolate piping prepared for us.

Finally we ended the session with the last filling for Harris, the Orang Utan. And as we await for the chocolate to cool down, we were guided back downstairs to the retailing floor for an experiential tour and chocolate tasting.

Harrison now hailed as one of the largest chocolate makers in the country, with their partnership with Barry Callebaut, a world leading chocolate manufacturer, makes it worthwhile for you to bring your family and friends for a visit to this homegrown establishment by Malaysians for the world!

Berrylicious Recipes by Ribena Malaysia

September 08, 2018 12
Wholesome berrylicious goodies can be found jam-packed in a bottle of Ribena Blackcurrant goodness for the whole family! Over the years, you've probably have heard, seen or even tasted Ribena yourself, however, did you know that there's more to it than just a thirst quenching beverage?

For 63 years it was introduced to Malaysians, that is like double my age! I wasn't even born yet! So many years and Ribena is like the best blackcurrant juice that many, fell head over heels with, (I know I did!). But most parents, including mine are sometimes against it because they say it's too sweet (because I love to have mine thick and sweet!). But I mean, come on, who can resist such yummy flavours?

Today I was introduced to another whole new level of Ribena at the Ribena Berrylicious Workshop in Handcrafted Creative Bites Studio at Setia City Mall. Together with guest host of the day, Dr. Jezamine Lim who led the event; We had the opportunity to experience first-hand, on how to take your Ribena Blackcurrant drink up a notch, with a few recipes that is just too cool not to share with you all today!

We started off with making the cheese tart, the whole workshop was guided by the studio's very own food director herself, Wong May Chew, who also created the recipes demonstrated. I've always love baking in a slow paced environment and in a comfy zone in my own kitchen, also because I am used to my own baking tools and took time to know the ingredients. But today I was a little clumsy and off-beat. Also because it is my first time making a cheese tart.

The cheese tart steps is quite simple actually once you get the hang of it. Mix the gelatin with water and set aside, heat up the milk, add blue pea flowers and mix till it has turned slightly bluish. And... we just follow the recipe. Basically the base of the cheese tart are the Ribena jellies.

Once placed in the fridge to set. We proceeded to make a salad dressing with Ribena juice!

Then it was the Vietnamese roll with Ribena jellies. This is quite unique. With the right portion of ingredients, it can create a unique flavour of mint from the mint leaves, blandness from the bee hoon and blackcurrant sweetness from the Ribena jelly. You don't even need sauce anymore. That's how unique it can be.

After that we got to enjoy the food readily prepared using the Ribena Blackcurrant syrup or gummy sweets.

There was also a mini competition for the Most Creative Cheese Tart decorations. I made a heart shape out of whatever ingredients I managed to grab. And the winning prize was the Ribena mini fridge!

Congrats to Lily Shah (The Buxom Babe/Parenthood Magazine) who won the competition!

It was a fun time spent and the recipes will be really useful for me as I can make it for my kids using Ribena.
